Welcome

 Minutes from last PTA Mtg were distributed. S Young motions to approve the minutes; S Friend seconds the motion. The minutes are entered into record as written.

Treasurer’s Report the report was distributed and reviewed

   o Skate Night was very successful and well attended

   o The day after skate night was a non-school day, and this may have contributed to the high level of attendance

   o We will try to schedule skate night prior to a non-school day again next year

   o Over $200 was raised

Red Cross/Haiti

   o Pic Pt Elem is collecting donations from the students for disbursement to the Red Cross for Haiti relief

   o The district charges the school a fee of 4.03% to distribute the funds to the Red Cross

   o The PTA Board is proposing that we donate that fee

 PTA President Wendy Eike asked for a vote and the decision is 13 out of 14 members approve the use of Pic Pt PTA funds to cover the 4.03% charged by the district in regards to the Haiti relief fund. One member present abstained from voting.

Principal Update

   o So far the students have raised over $1200 for Haiti relief

   o The new Math/Science After school program sponsored by Engineering Alliance is underway and we are at capacity with 60 students enrolled

   o We have two assemblies coming up, one is science based and the other is the 5th Ave Theatre

Board Positions

   o We are currently seeking volunteers to fill the board positions for next year

Science Night

   o This event, along with the Book Fair, has been postponed until May

   o The date is TBD

Committee Updates

   o Candygrams – currently running, chaired by Christine Morrison

   o Sock Hop is coming up on Feb. 11th

   o Staff Appreciation

      · February theme is a Mexican buffet lunch and S Neumeister is securing volunteers

      · The date is set for Feb. 19th

Special Guest Speaker – Troy Miller

   o The Lighthouse Literature prgm was created by group of librarians, including Troy, to better reflect the various reading levels at Pic Pt Elem

   o The students vote on which books are their favorite

   o Troy is working on making some changes to the prgm but is first assessing how many volunteers she will have to help her next year

January 14, 2010

·         Treasurer’s Report – the report was distributed and reviewed

o        we are very pleased with the new “Popcorn Parties”; they are adding to our revenue

o        Art/Craft Night was very successful bringing in over $800 with approx 350 pp in attendance

·         Ballot Measures (Guest Speaker Carolyn Webb)

o        Mukilteo School District is placing two levies on the Feb ballot

o        the first is the renewal of the existing Maintenance & Operations Levy which expires in 2010

o        the M&O Levy pays for basic education costs that are not fully funded by the state; this levy provides approximately 18% of the District’s annual operating revenue

o        the second measure is a six year Capital Projects Levy that will cover some necessary maintenance and renovation to existing facilities

o        Pic Pt Elem will participate in sign waving on Jan. 23, and hanging brochures on doors on Jan. 30

o        Carolyn Webb, Executive Dir. of Business Services, spoke about the levies on behalf of the District

o        with looming state budget cuts on the horizon (which we cannot control), it’s imperative these levies pass 

PTA President Wendy Eike asked for a vote to endorse the Feb 9th levy which will be published in the Mukilteo Beacon.

o        the members voted and the result is unanimous in support of the endorsement

·         Committee Updates

o        Birthday Popcorn Parties

§         L Barton explained the process and how to request a Popcorn Party

o        Art Docent

§         still short on volunteers in PM Kindergarten, but the prgm is going very well

§         two lessons out of six have been completed so far

§         finances are on track against budget

·         each lesson costs $500:  $250 for the Art of The Master’s Lesson and $250 for artist led docent training, materials and packaging

§         the addition of a 2nd staff member to help the AM Kindergarten class has been a great help

o        Skate Night

§         date has been changed to Jan. 28th

§         flyer is ready for distribution

o        Science Night/Book Exchange

§         VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! 

·         Principal’s Report

o        Jessica Kelley is Picnic Point’s new Dean of Students

o        Adrianna Cho will be a PST when Sonja Vaughan returns from maternity leave

o        starting in February, after-school Math & Science classes will be offered for 4th and 5th graders 

·         Guest Speaker – Reenie Brooking

o        Reenie previously taught PE at Columbia Elem, and now owns and operates her own fitness studio, in addition to teaching various classes to children and adults in the area

o        studies have shown that children who get at least one hour of physical activity per day perform higher on test scores and have better mental attitudes than those who do not get exercise

o        Reenie demonstrated simple ways to help kids get active, even when the activity is confined to the indoors
